Bloody Jack

For my first blog, I begin with a book I've just finished reading. It called " My Bonny Light Horseman' by L.A. Meyer, and is the latest installment in the Bloody Jack adventures. Despite what the title might lead you to believe it is actually about a girl who starts out as Mary, an orphan living in London in the late seventeenth century.
She is very witty and bold- and an entertaining narrator. It the beginning chapters of the first book, it can sometimes be difficult to read because Mary is mostly uneducated(though she is somewhat literate) and therefor her 'voice' has poor grammar and literary versions of her accent. Things begin to become more interesting, though, when she decides to go to sea. She disguises herself as a boy, names herself Jack and hires onto an outbound ship.

Now some might see the how many different ways this rash plan could fail. But not Jacky. She sees new opportunities and chances for fame as many children do. She wants to be known in lore and song!(AKA famous) And she does achieve this but not through(much) of her own doing. She gets into scrapes where her sense of honor and adventure lead her down a less-than-easy path.

At some point during her travels, Jacky is falls in love, is discovered as a girl and eventually branded a pirate. She gains her fame( unwillingly) and all the deeds she is known for are pure chance(with the afore mentioned luck to keep her alive).

These books are full of adventure and laughter, love and regret and a good girl trying to be her best-whatever people may say of her. She loves to laugh and dance, and doesn't understand why people would forgo things on propriety alone. I love them, and hope I have conveyed them well. Please trust me in reading the first. If you don't like it (which I doubt) you can stop anytime you want.

Really.

Promise.
